Our final talk this term by Prof John Harvey, ‘The Ghost in the Machine: Spirit and Camera’, will explore the complex relationship between the representation of spirits and the nature of photography - in particular, examples of “spirit photographs”: pre-photographic images and photographs of apparitions.

Rylands Room is hard to find, so look out for signposts… ask at the Porters’ Lodge if you’re not sure.

Talk by Drew Gardner - Lighting and Location

Our third talk this term is by Drew Gardner, a finalist in the 2008 Hasselblad Finals.  He will be talking about his epic location photography and his use of lighting, as well as  the future of professional photography and how students can get into the business.

The Chetwynd Room is just behind the bar… ask at the Porters’ Lodge if you’re not sure.

Black and White Photographs Needed As Props

Peepshow, a show at the ADC this week, is looking for some black and white photographs to use as props.

Any photographer around Cambridge who would be willing to supply around 20 black and white photos for Wednesday through Saturday should contact the assistant stage manager, Jessica Jennings, at jlj37 at cam.ac.uk.

The photos will be returned in the same condition as they were given, and the photographers name will go into the show brochure.

  • food photography
  • portraits (e.g. for interviews)
  • cover images for Thursday (the supplementry magazine)
  • artsy images to run with features

“Images of India” & PhoCUS EGM

Our second talk of the term, Images of India by David Steel, will be held on Friday 31st October, 6.30-8.00 at the Winstanley Lecture Hall in Trinity College. We’ll make sure people can find their way there… look out for the committee member standing in front of Great Gate!

30 minutes before the start of the talk, all members are invited to attend the PhoCUS Extraordinary General Meeting. Said meeting is being called for the replacement of old membership cards and the confirmation of the following candidates for committee positions:

  • Vice-President - Alicia Goh
  • Secretary - Sebastian Lomas
  • Events Officer - Amrita Dhar
  • Competitions & Exhibitions Officer - Alice Zhang

Anyone can contest the positions, but only members displaying their membership cards may vote in the proceedings. Anyone who’s interested in applying should email me (dshcc2) directly.

Novice Workshop

October 19th, 2008

The Novice Workshop is now fully booked up.

It will be held on Saturday the 25th, from 2 to 6 (weather permitting): first 2 hours of shooting and then 2 hours of review, with short talks on basics in exposure and composition. The charge “at the door” is £2 for non-members and free for PhoCUS members.

We will meet outside Trinity’s Great Gate at 2. Remember to charge up your cameras and bring your memory cards!

Fresher’s Squash & Talk by Mr. Gomersall

This year the Fresher’s Squash will take place at the Bateman Auditorium at Gonville and Caius College, from 16:30-18.30 on Friday, the 17th of October.

We are also planning on it being an extralarge photoshare session, so everyone (old members and freshers) are welcome to join in, and bring their photos (prints, USB sticks or any form of voodoo you like).

The Squash will be immediately followed by a talk on bird photography by Mr. Chris Gomersall, from 18:30-20:00.

Fresher’s Fair!

It’s that time of year again!

PhoCUS will have a Fresher’s Fair Stall in the Main Hall at Kelsey Kerridge, stall B02. We will have prints and we will incite many a Fresher to join the ranks of our fine society. Come and have a chat, have a look at the pictures and sign up for the mailing list!
